The Ancient Boat
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith"
Matthew 8:23-27
In 1986 two brothers from Kibbutz Ginosar discovered the remains of an ancient boat on the northwest shore of the Sea of the Galilee not far from the Yigal Allon Center. It was covered in clay and therefore preserved. Radiocarbon dating shows that the boat dates back to 100 BC to 100 AD. This is both the time and place in which Jesus operated and in which in the Jewish tradition, the Battle of Migdal, part of the Great Revolt of the Jews against the Romans took place.
The boat underwent a lengthy conservation process and in 2000 was transferred to a new exhibition hall at the Yigal Allon Center, where visitors can learn the story of its discovery, excavation and preservation.
